Cars

that's the sound cars make as they drive over the four inch deep pothole outside our house.

during the day, traffic slows them down, but at night they hit it upwards of fifty miles an hour sometimes. as far as i know, no one has broken an axle yet. but sometimes i will be woken by a tump-tump-twee and then, in the morning, i will find a hubcap by our front steps.

so far we have a honda, a ford, a chevy and two nissans.

the battery on my motorcycle is dead. completely. i've ordered a new one, but this hasn't stopped me from riding it in the meantime. i have to put a hairdryer to the carb before i kick it over, and i've had to adjust the idle mixture up so that it revs at 2k rather than 1.2, otherwise the draw from the headlight stalls it out at stoplights. despite it all, i love that machine.

i've landed a paying freelance writing gig composing "hip" and occasionally "edgy" tech content for a canadian men's magazine which shall remain nameless. i am not proud of this. e has pointed out that she thinks it strange that i find this gig embarrassing and yet had no qualms working for pornographers in holland. i tried to explain that i had no problem with sleazy, just tacky. still, i am not too proud to take their money.

#

work on my novel has been proceeding apace. by "apace" i mean "as fast as can reasonably accepted" rather than "as fast as i had hoped." at the peak of my optimism, i had thought that i might be done a first draft by now. that is very much not the case, but the end is in sight, which is a lot more than i could say six months ago. i have had some doubts about the literary worth of the piece over these last few months, but fortunately that is not enough to dissuade me. i have reached the point where i realise that it is much better to have a finished shitty novel than it is to have two chapters of the great american etc.

#

i have seen about half an oodle of movies in the last three months. of them the gay cowboy movie was by far the best. the darjeeling unlimited is probably second, but it's well out of trebuchet range.

i still haven't gotten to the books that some husians sent me while i was in holland because i am in the process of simultaneously reading everything by michael chabon and rereading everything by stanislaw lem. i promise i will get to them eventually.

#

i guess that's all for now. salud.

Don't let doubts of worth stop you. by Christopher Robin was Murdered (4.00 / 4) #1 Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 08:42:02 PM EST
Kafka hated everything he wrote while Dan Brown's web site happily trots out the fact that he was selected as one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People."

In his defense, his site does give this helpful bit of advice for novelists:

"In addition to starting early, I keep an antique hour glass on my desk and every hour break briefly to do pushups, sit-ups, and some quick stretches. I find this helps keep the blood (and ideas) flowing. I'm also a big fan of gravity boots. Hanging upside down seems to help me solve plot challenges by shifting my entire perspective."

Perhaps you're not hanging upside down enough.

it's been a long time by 256 (4.00 / 1) #4 Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 09:11:11 PM EST
since i let self doubt keep me from doing anything. much to the chagrin of those who have to observe the consequences.

and the inclusion of the word "antique" in that paragraph does more to incriminate Dan Brown than anything else i can bring to mind.

also, i vow to enter this WFC despite my recent absence from same.

battery acid is dirt cheap by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #2 Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 08:58:44 PM EST
and a trickle charger is less than $20, though I have heard of people running small bikes on a capacitor (that thumper Enfield made in India).

this bike can indeed by 256 (4.00 / 1) #3 Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 09:07:10 PM EST
run on a capacitor. but it's not technically legal in pennsylvania. and having a battery makes it easier to kickstart.

i considered overhauling the current battery, but a replacement is only $45, so what the hell.
